Because I Said So
Because I Said So is a book for curious children and for parents who don’t have all of the answers. It’s an endearing story about an adventurous girl named Little Jay, who always asks “Why?” and her mother, who always answers “Because I Said So.” Living in a garden surrounded by the Forbidden Forest, Little Jay gets into a series of troubles. Each adventure is more dramatic than the last. In the end, Little Jay learns that her mother may not answer all of her questions, but she wants what is best for her daughter. Little Jay’s curiosity leads her to make discoveries for herself. This story will appeal to the imagination of any young reader.Share
About Haven
Haven Miller graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Endicott College and studied children's illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). She is an award-winning artist and has been invited to exhibit in shows across the country. As a child, however, Haven was a troublemaker. At six years of age she asked her mother why she couldn't go into the salt marsh by the sea. Her mom replied, "Because I said so" Naturally, Haven, her sister Grace and their friend Jack snuck in anyway. That day, Haven and Grace sank up to their chests in quicksand. Luckily, Jack was able to pull them out before anything bad happened.
In high school, Haven thought about this experience and realized her mother was right and that she should have listened to her: While teaching art to children in Costa Rica, Haven noticed that many kids had their own "salt marsh by the sea" stories. She finished the book Because I Said So to create a fun, light-hearted solution to communication barriers between parents and their curious children.
